Osteopathy & Midwifery - Baby Feeding Clinic
Feeding new-born babies can be problematic. Failure to feed successfully, and problems with feeding and digestive problems in general is one of the most common presentations for osteopaths and midwifes in our clinic.
Over the past 20 years there has seen a significant increase in the number of women having the desire to breast feed their babies. This has been driven by the overwhelming emerging evidence base demonstrating the benefits of breast feeding on overall babies’ health. We have noticed a significant increase in numbers of parents seeking our advice and osteopathic treatment in order to resolve the feeding difficulties that they have.
With our help we have been successful in resolving many feeding issues as well as giving practical advice to parents.
The key to resolving the problems is understanding the anatomy of the struggling infant to bottle or breast feed. Paediatric osteopaths and midwives are trained to understand the suck/swallow/breathing mechanisms that need to be coordinated optimally in order to produce a feeding mechanism that works optimally.
It is believed that if all the structures of the mouth, oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus and gut are not functioning well, problems with feeding (poor latch, swallowing, digestion can arise).
Paediatric osteopaths and midwives understand the anatomy involved in feeding and osteopaths are skilled at using gentle osteopathic techniques to release tension in the soft tissues in this mechanism.
When you present to us the osteopaths and midwifes will take a detailed case history about the problems you are experiencing: unsettled baby, fussy eater, reflux, colic, clicky feeding, painful feeding, other digestive issues. They will then examine your baby and then discuss with you why they think your baby has these issues. They will then come up with a way forward for you and your baby to help with your concerns. Whether that is with suggesting different feeding positions, feeding techniques, and /or a course of osteopathic treatment.
We currently run an Osteopathy Children and Babies’
clinic as well as a Midwife Clinic at designated times during the
week. Please call us for further information.
